Pallet transport, LTL and FTL – which option should you choose?
The batch size, date, loading method and responsibility of the parties determine the actual delivery cost.
The cheapest transport rate does not always mean the lowest cost of the entire operation. In batches of returns, the height of the pallets, the possibility of stacking, the replacement of carriers, loading time and the risk of damage are important.
Transport of single pallets and collection
The pallet network works well for small orders with standard dimensions. In domestic trade, pallet shipping on delivery is possible and respected if the parties agree on it and it is offered by the selected service. In international trade, cash on delivery is more difficult and rarely practiced - payment before loading remains the standard.
The goods pass through terminals, so they require stable packaging. Check the height, weight, protrusion limits and terms of the pickup service.
- dimensions and weight of the pallet
- domestic delivery upon arrangement
- prepayment in international trade
- non-standard surcharges
LTL - truckload portion
LTL allows you to transport several or a dozen pallets without ordering an entire car. The timing may be less predictable, and there are additional logistics along the way.
Determine whether the rate includes loading, unloading, notification and additional waiting time.
- number of pallet places
- pickup and delivery date
- reloading
- notification
FTL - full transport
FTL is the natural choice for a large batch when the goods fill most of the trailer or require a direct route. Fewer reloadings reduce the risk of damage.
A full car requires preparation of warehouse, equipment and documents to avoid costly stoppages.
- direct route
- loading time
- ramp availability
- load capacity and volume
Establish liability in the contract
Incoterms® rules help describe the division of tasks, costs and risks between the seller and the buyer. However, they do not replace the entire sales contract or detailed transport specification.
Indicate the exact rule, place and version, for example Incoterms® 2020, and check the consequences with your advisor for a larger transaction.
- who orders the carrier
- moment of risk transfer
- insurance
- loading and unloading
Request a quote for your zip code
For a reliable quote, you need pickup and delivery locations, the number of pallets, weight, dimensions, deadline and information about the possibility of stacking. Also provide requirements for the car and pallet replacement.
Compare offers for the same scope of services, not just the final price.
- exact postal codes
- dimensions and weight
- deadline and time window
- additional services
